The proper recipe is; 12 oz warm ale, 12 0z cold ale & gin.

A little sugar in the bottom of the glass helps blend the flavors. I always add the gin before the porter. And really, porter or stout is the ale to use. Traditionally, the drink is topped with a sprinkle of nutmeg, but I like a pinch of cinnamon in addition to the nutmeg. It gives the drink a better balance of sweet and bitter, I think. Also, the ale should be cool, not warm. If a dog's nose is warm, the dog is ill. ;)
