I was taught that the original Old Fashioned has nothing but sugar muddled with bitters, add bourbon and ice. Adding fruit and/or soda is a corruption of the old fashioned Old Fashion.

It's a shame that very few bartenders know the difference between Angostura and peyshards bitters. Because they don't know the difference, they use both in an "Old Fashion"

If you add the ice before you add the bitters, when u pour the bourbon, it blends better. Remember, This drink is NOT to be shaken, but to be stired

WRONG this is not an Old Fashioned. To make a real Old Fashioned, you MUST use LEMON and not orange. You use DISTILLED water, not carbonated. You put a sugar cube in the glass, put the Bitters on the cube, drip the water on the cube to dissolve it, twist a lemon peel and put it in, and muddle these four ingredients together with the back of a teaspoon, put ice cubes in the glass, pour in the whiskey, and top off with more water. Using orange, cherries, or soda water is NOT an Old Fashioned.

    Soda water ruins this drink.

I'm making this with 1 teaspoon of suger in the bottom of the empty old fashioned glass. Add a 3-4cm long orange peel with the orange side turning upwards. Muddle the peel into the suger (press 2-3 times). Add 2 drops of angustura bitter Add 2-3 ice cubes Add 1 shot of bourbon, stir Add 2-3 ice cubes Add 1 shot of bourbon, stir Add 2-3 ice cubes Add 1 shot of bourbon, stir Serve and drink
