What is the truth? Made by socialite Margarita Sames in Acapulco in 1948? Chef Ceasar, in Tijuana, who named it after his esposa? Never heard that one. Don Carlos Orozco, a bartender at Hussong's Cantina en Ensenada? First introduced in 1938, and created for a show girl named Rita De La Rosa, from Guadalajara. Full name, Margarita.

Cesare Cardini (February 24, 1896 - November 3, 1956) was an Italian American restaurateur, chef, and hotel owner, who is credited with creating the Caesar salad. Caesar went to the United States in his early 20s. He ran a restaurant in Sacramento, then he moved to San Diego where he was in the restaurant business. At the same time he engaged in the same business in Tijuana, where he could avoid the restrictions of prohibition. He married Camille, and had a daughter, Rosa Maria Cardini.

If we does not know how the name margarita came about or who invented the drink, how do we know what exactly went into the orginal margarita recipe? Two websites of brand name tequila provide their recipes for perfect margarita that have no triple sec as ingredient!

Another explanation, however, is that the Margarita is merely a popular American drink, the Daisy, remade with tequila instead of brandy, which became popular during Prohibition as people drifted over the border for alcohol. There is an account from 1936 of Iowa newspaper editor James Graham finding such a cocktail in Tijuana, years before any of the other Margarita "creation myths".[10] Margarita is Spanish for Daisy. It is likely that Orozco, Herrara, and Cruz merely perfected the "Tequila Daisy". Wikipedia (few ideas, but this sounded the best)

There are several versions of the story of who invented the Margarita. The bottom line is that it is a mystery. No one is sure. It doesn't matter. Just enjoy it for what it is!

The original Margarita was not invented by a person named Margarita. It was invented by Chef Cesar, at Cesar's in Tijuana, Mexico. The same guy that invetned Cesar's salad n/k/a Ceasar's Salad. BTW, Chef Cesar named it the Margarita, which was his wife's name.
