How to Make It

A Salty Dog is identical to a Greyhound, the only difference being that a Salty Dog requires the glass to be rimmed with salt.

  1. Wet the rim of a highball glass with juice, then rim with kosher or rock salt.
  2. Add ice to glass, then pour in vodka.
  3. Add grapefruit juice.
  4. Garnish with lemon, lime or a grapefruit wedge.

Preparation notes

  • A Salty Dog can be made with gin instead of vodka.

I like this one. I believe it's called the Greyhound without the salt, though, which is how I like it.

This is my mom's FAVE. The name makes me laugh, I feel silly when I order one, but the bartenders know what it is. Usually make it with vodka, not gin. Maybe it's a Midwestern thing.
